Abstract

Depression is an important global public health problem and one of the most common and serious mental disorders. In addition to genetics, personality, and environmental factors, lifestyle factors such as diet have also been proposed as risk modifiers for depression. In the last decades, many studies have concluded evidence on the associations between dietary patterns or dietary quality indices, food groups, macronutrients, and micronutrients, and the incidence of depression or the severity of depressive symptoms. These findings could be of importance for the prevention and treatment of depression. However, the strength, precision, quality of the evidence and potential bias of the associations in these studies still need to be clarified
Aim of the study: To define the dietary pattern, the prevalence of depressive symptoms and its associated risk factors and to examine the association between dietary patterns and depression of staff members of Minia University
Subjects and methods:
An interventional crosssectional sectional study among University staff and their assistants, was conducted from November 2020 to January 2022 in Minia city
Data was collected by interview, every person was interviewed, and the aim of the study was explained.
The questionnaire included socio demographic data, occupational, medical history, Center for Epidemiologic Studies – Depression (CES–D) scale and three days food record
A health education proshore about healthy diet was offered to participants of the study.
Results: This study included 210 staff members and their assistants in Minia University. The age of the subjects ranged between 25 68 years (mean age 37.7±9.6). Males construct 31% of the studied sample, while females construct 69%.
low fiber intake was the most important factor associated with presence of depressive symptoms (CES D ≥16); OR= 12.130, C.I.95%= 2.718 54.139, P=0.001
A small but significant reduction of depressive symptoms (decrease of total CES D score) was found after healthy diet intervention among studied (both males and females) staff members and their assistants in Minia University.
Conclusion & Recommendations: The present study demonstrated that dietary fibers, protein, riboflavin and polyunsaturated fatty acid intake might reduce the risk of depressive symptoms in adults. Diet and nutrition can be used as a part of a comprehensive strategy for the prevention of depressive problems.
