Abstract

Summary Conclusions IBS is a common cause of functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, presenting as abdominal pain and alteration of bowel habit. Its prevalence ranges from 9% to 23% of the worldwide population, Patients were divided into groups with and without IBS based on the Rome IV diagnostic criteria. It can be debilitating in some patients, while some patients may have mild-to-moderate symptoms. Before making the diagnosis, it is crucial to rule out organic gastrointestinal disorders that may present as IBS especially in patients with concerning features that include presenting symptoms after the age of 50 years, unexplained weight loss, family history of organic gastrointestinal disorders, gastrointestinal blood loss. Both of the patients in this case study were initially diagnosed and treated for IBS. The incidence of gastrointestinal system (GIS) symptoms is higher in HD patients. Among these GIS symptoms, IBS findings are more common than in the general population and occur in 11–44% of HD patients. Symptoms in IBS patients are sometimes exacerbated by stress and may be related to psychiatric diseases chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with depression and anxiety and is known to impair quality of life in hemodialysis patients compared to the normal population. Major depression and anxiety are also known to be more common in patients with CKD. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of IBS and the factors associated with IBS and to investigate the psychological symptoms of patients who received hemodialys Our study included 200 participants, 100 of them were CKD on hemodialysis. Other 100 of them were CKD on conservative treatment inward, outpatient clinic of internal medicine department of Tanta university hospitals, from dialysis unit. All patients in our study were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, pelvi-abdominal u/s and laboratory investigations including: - Complete blood count, liver function test, kidney function test Serum calcium and phosphorus. - Fasting blood sugar, 2hr post prandial, HbA1c and CRP. In our study, hemodialysis Patients were divided into groups(with and without IBS) based on the Rome IV diagnostic criteria ,demonstrated higher levels of anxiety and depression in d - ialysis patients with IBS than those without. In our study we found that IBS significantly more frequently in patients who received hemodialysis treatment. Also Depression and Anxiety state was significantly higher in hemodialysis group compared with conservative group.
