Abstract

Some might think using prayer beads is relatively a newly introduced tradition among the Protestants, though it has a long history in spirituality. This practice most probably began five thousand years ago.
Thesis consists of six chapters; Chapter one, speaks about the importance of prayer in christianity as an essential element of any believer’s life. In early christian literature, prayers varied in shape, vocabulary, and context. As a matter of fact, the literature prayers were found in narratives, letters, and sermons. Chapter two, discusses the prayer beads and prayer ropes in both Eastern and Western churches. It also illustrates how the usage of prayer beads started in Coptic literature and in Byzantine literature. Chapter three deals with the emergence of prayer ropes in early Coptic art from the 6th century till the 16th century A.D. Chapter four discusses the emergence of prayer beads in Byzantine art in different types of materials. Chapter five is a comparative analytical study between Coptic and Byzantine Art. Chapter six deals with the usage of prayer beads in modern Coptic heritage and how people use it nowadays and what are the formulas of the recited prayers. It also shows how Coptic Catholics use rosaries in prayers and also in daily life.
