Abstract

Rational Greco-Roman medicine was practiced in Egypt to maintain different curative, therapeutic and healing issues. There was a great medical revolution attributed to Alexandria Medical School and its brilliant professional pioneers who succeeded in separating between medicine and superstitions. It was a real turning point on both local and international levels involving different medical branches with a special attention to Anatomy, Physiology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Feminine Healthcare. Different labor presentations were being practiced as well as various medical tools were being used to fulfil the multiple associated tasks by specialized midwives, Gynaecologists and other care providers. Nevertheless, folk medicine continued to be used as an integral part of the socio-religious and cultural traditions. A unique mixture of herbals and other substances was used as remedy for a specific disease along with reciting some healing spells and taking all types of protecting precautions for the households especially women and their children throughout the different stages of their lifetime. Thus, wearing amulets, burning incense, offerings to different deities seeking for obtaining their divine protection were necessary. Both scientific and non-scientific Gynaecology and Obstetrics were sharing a lot of mutual goals as alleviating females’ suffering and defeating the severe pain once and forever.
