Abstract

There is a great challenge facing the world concerning the water scarcity. Egypt is one of the developing countries suffering water scarcity nowadays. Agriculture and irrigation in Egypt represent the main consumers of water. There are great amounts of waste water drained and discarded useless. Hemodialysis units are consuming a huge amount of water for hemodialysis process and also discard a huge amount of waste water which could be treated or reused as it is. This neglected waste water could be identified as (An Elephant in Room) Aim of our study is trying to reuse the waste and rejected water as it is from hemodialysis in agricultural irrigation as an alternative water resource. The used materials is: Soil (sandy soil), Plant (Basil plant; Ocimumbasilicum) and four water types Tap water Water rejected after RO system Post dialysis effluent water Mix of RO rejected water and post dialysis effluent water in 1:1 ratio. We exclude all plants eaten by humans as vegetables, fruits and cereals. The study demonstrated the possibility of using the rejected water after RO process in agriculture of the Basil plant and showed satisfactory results compared with the WHO and FAO standards. Spent dialysate effluent water has negative effects on plant and soil due to its high salinity, while the mixed type of water T4 could give satisfactory results . According to the characteristics of the water we can use the rejected water after RO system as it isand the combined type of water T4 = (T2&T3) in 1:1 ratio for agricultural purposes as watering gardens and landscape planting so that we can restore a new water resource which can help in facing challenges of water scarcity especially in Egypt and other developing countries suffering this problem. While the wasted water after hemodialysis we recommend to reuse it for irrigation after its treatment and recycling process.
