Abstract

At these times, the Egyptian government is working on implementing an ambitious plan to increase the amount of transport cargo through River Nile. Consequently, in the near future, this plan will lead to a reduction in congestion on roads and thus reduce both road accidents and pollution within cities. Moreover, the implementation of this plan will result in many environmental and economical reflections, that will benefit both the citizens and society.
In this thesis, light was shed on obstacles facing the expansion of the transport of cargo across the River Nile and way to overcome them. As a result, it became clear that the most important obstacle facing river transport in Egypt is the limited water depth of the River Nile. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to find an economical and safe river transport mean that can transport large quantities of goods through a very shallow waterways.
The distinctive characteristics of all river transport means used in Egypt were reviewed and a comparison was made between them. According to the results of previous researches, it was concluded that transporting cargos using pusher train system is the most appropriate means of cargo transport through limited water depth waterways.
A comparison was made between six different configurations of pusher train barge system to find the most suitable configuration for this system. This comparison was carried out based on a technical and operational criterion called transport efficiency. Also, Cairo-Aswan waterway was chosen as a route for this study.
This study was conducted using a software package regarding computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for three different loading conditions (50% - 75% - 100%) and the results were validated. Finally, the most suitable configuration of the pusher train barge system at each loading condition was reached.
