Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the effect of the target readers’ (henceforth TRs) social and cultural needs and backgrounds on Bakhtiar’s translation of The Holy Quran (2012). It also attempts to reveal the extent to which her translation is faithful. As a target-oriented study, a special attention is paid to discussing the most outstanding social and cultural features of the target community to examine the effect of extratextual elements on the translator’s decisions. For achieving the aims of the study, a sample analysis of Bakhtiar’s translation of some selected Quranic verses that serve the purposes of the study is conducted based on a selected integrated model of analysis. This model mainly draws on Vermeer’s the Skopos theory (2004), Newmark’s plan of translation criticism and suggested translation methods (1988), Von Flotow’s feminist translation strategies (1991), and Baker’s model of translation strategies (2011). The study concentrates on analyzing the translation of the selected Quranic terms on both the lexical and paratextual levels. Besides, Al-Hilali and Khan’s translation of The Holy Quran (1983) is used as a benchmark against which Bakhtiar’s translation is compared and judged. Study findings demonstrate that the social and cultural needs and expectations of Bakhtiar’s TRs project a huge influence on her lexical choices and adopted translation methods and strategies. This leads her to manipulate the source text (henceforth ST) and produce an inaccurate and unfaithful translation of it. Keywords: Bakhtiar, Quran translation, Skopos theory, target-oriented translation, translator’s faithfulness.
