Abstract

This study sheds light on the relationship between ideology, power, and translation by portraying the history of translation in the Arab world, notably in Palestine The study discusses the translation movement throughout history, with a focus on the twentieth century to the present; presenting the three stages the translation movement in Palestine faced: before the Catastrophe, after the Catastrophe, and from the eighties until now, as well as the two main features of translation in Palestine in the twentieth century, which are the shift of the source language at different times and the change of the message carried by the translated texts, both of which are linked closely to the Palestinian and the Middle East political struggles. The thesis examines the relationships between ideology, power, and media on one hand and translation on the other. It also covers the effects of ideology, power, and media on the translator’s production which is a rewriting of the source text according to his/her ideology, political opinion, or common interests. The main focus of the thesis is the intellectual translator, Adel Zuaiter, his particular ideology, the factors that influenced his ideology, and how those affected his translations. The ideological thought of Adel Zuaiter was manifested in three aspects: enlightenment, nationalism, and liberalism. He was quite picky about the works he selected to present to the Arab World. The current study aims to let the world know more about creative Arab intellectuals. Therefore, the thesis will be closed by several recommendations and conclusions. Keywords: ideology, power, media, Adel Zuiater.
