Abstract

Egypt is an arid land. It depends mainly on irrigation for agricultural production.
Pumps are the main components of irrigation system network. Despite its importance,
there is no information system available to assist farmers and farm owners manage the
performance of their pumps.
In this study, we develop an expert system as a tool for management of centrifugal
irrigation pumps. We use the standard procedure for expert system development:
identification, conceptualization, formalization, implementation, validation, and
testing. The Centrifugal Pump Expert System, CPES has four modules; installation,
maintenance, troubleshooting, and evaluation of performance of existing pumping
plant. CLIPS (C language Integrated Production System) environment version 6.3,
2015 is selected as the development tool. The, CPES is calibrated by two methods;
domain experts and previously solved examples.
For domain expert validation, two experts participate in the evaluation process by
answering a questionnaire about different problems related to pump management
process. We compared the recommendations of the CPES with those of human
experts for all possible sets of data; about 100 case. The comparison showed that they
agree in almost all cases except few points that we add it to the knowledge base.
Expert knowledge has a dynamic nature: knowledge and experience are continuously
subject to changes. We can always improve the performance of the expert system
adding new information upon its availability. The CPES fourth module; performance evaluation of pumping plant, was tested by known examples obtained from (Harrison & Tyson, 2012) and (USDA, 1984). We found the CPES recommendations completely agree with those examples.
89 Extension agents in cooperative companies could use the centrifugal pump expert system. The system could also be used as a training tool for students, farmers and farm owners to be able to take informed decisions about their pumping plants based on the situation they have, and when they really need professional help, ahead of problem occurred.
