Abstract

Background: Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary disorder due to loss or destruction of melanocytes from the epidermis. Oxidative stress is the imbalance between oxidant-antioxidant systems and may play a major role in the vitiligo pathogenesis. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) is a family of enzymes that are responsible for the metabolism of various endogenous and exogenous substances. • Aim and objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the potential role of CYP450 in the pathogenesis of vitiligo through measuring the immunohistochemical expression of CYP450 in vitiligo patients and controls. • Patients and methods: This study included 30 patients with vitiligo and 10 controls of matched age and sex with the patients. A 3-mm punch biopsy was performed from involved skin of each patient under local anesthesia and from control subjects. It was stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and was subjected to immunostaining detection of CYP1B1.
