Abstract

To assess the serum lipid profile changes in pre-eclamptic women and the possibility of its use for diagnosis of pre-eclampsia. Material and methods: A case control study was done consisting of total 86 study subjects, 43 already diagnosed as pre-eclamptic women and 43 normotensive pregnant women. Age range was 18 to 35 years, gestational age 20 weeks to term were included. Serum Total Cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and HDL-cholesterol were measured by enzymatic colometric method. Results: The mean serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were significantly higher in preeclamptic women as compared to normotensive pregnant women. While preeclamptic women showed significant fall in high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels as compared to normotensive pregnant women. Conclusion: Lipid metabolism plays a key role in the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia. Increased serum lipid levels ( TC, TG, LDL and VLDL) along with decreased HDL-cholesterol levels and delayed triglycerides clearance and high blood pressure are associated with development of preeclampsia. This association may be significant in understanding the pathologic processes of preeclampsia and may help in developing strategies for prevention or early diagnosis of the disorder
