Abstract

Background: Disorders of sex development (DSD), are medical conditions involving the reproductive system. More specifically, these terms refer to ”congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical”. While some evidence is available on psychosexual outcomes, much less is known about the quality of life in this population, especially in children. Recent studies have demonstrated a reduction in the quality of life (QOL) in patients with DSD. Objectives: To assess the Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in Egyptian children and adolescents with DSD and to study different factors affecting their QOL. Method: cross-sectional study including 50 DSD patients regularly attending the endocrinology clinic at National Research Centre (NRC) and Endocrine and Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU) at Cairo University Children’s Hospital. HRQOL was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaires with 4 domains analyzed independently including physical, psychological, social relationship and environmental domains and also the total score with higher scores indicating better QOL
