Abstract

Today, violence at work often is considered a reflection of a more general, pervasive pattern of violence in society as a whole. Nurses working in acute care psychiatry experience high rates of violence perpetrated by patients and their perspectives. Nurses need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to de-escalate a potentially violent situation. Training in effective de-escalation techniques is essential to increase nurses{u2019} confidence and decrease the use of restraints. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of educational training program on self- confidence and workplace violence for nursing staff working in psychiatric hospital. A quasi-experimental design ”pre-posttest” was utilized for a forty-five psychiatric nurses from El Abbassia Mental Health Hospital. The majority of the study sample were men with average age ranged from 19<30 years old. Four tools were used, Socio- Demographic and department Data Sheet, Confidence in Managing Service user Aggression, Workplace Violence Inspection Checklist and the Pre-posttest. The workplace violence prevention program was designed in order to improve psychiatric nursing staff knowledge and self- confidence. This intervention was conducted by the main researcher, and was held over 12 two weekly one-hour sessions. The results of this study revealed that a highly statistically significant difference was found in nurses{u2019} post knowledge and self- confidence compared with pre assessment. To conclude, Staff training has salutary effect on their self-confidence in prevention, anticipation, containment and management of aggressive and violent behaviors within their workplace. Future studies are needed to get expansive enhancement in nurse- patient interaction and generalization of such interventions
