Abstract

Background: Many reports were carried out to search for effective, safe and affordable alternatives to hazardous female contraceptives.Herbal extracts and/or their secondary metabolites were one of the interesting areas to fulfill this issue. So far it was hard to predict the mechanism of action, recent techniques were applied to predict and/or prove specific mechanistic pathways of bioactive extracts. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of selected plants playing an important role in male contraception. The correlation between chemical profile of these extracts and their effects on male reproductive system was performed using various techniques. Study design: Hydro-methanolic extracts of ten selected plants were orally administrated to rats for 60 consecutive days, using a uniformed daily dose of 1/10 of LD50. Semen parameters, sexual organ weights and serum levels of male sex hormones, as well as testicular histopathology were evaluated. Moreover, metabolomic analysis using (LC{u2010}HR{u2010}ESI{u2010}MS), multivariate analysis (PCA), immunohistochemistry (caspase-3 and Ý-catenin), docking study, and physiochemical properties were performed. In addition, phytochemical screening of crude extracts and investigation of different fractions of the most bioactive extracts were done
