Abstract Atherosclerosis is the most underlying cause of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and stroke. Atherosclerosis is a systemic inflammatory process characterized by the accumulation of lipids and macrophages/lymphocytes within the intima of large arteries(3). Cardiac troponin (molecular weight approximately 23kDalton) is a key regulatory protein in cardiac muscle contraction where it binds to actin in the thin myofilaments to hold the actin-tropomyosin complex in place and so the myosin cannot bind to actin in relaxed muscle. Proteolysis of cardiac troponin I and cardiac troponin T occurs in the myocardium in response to ischemia leading to post-translational modification⁽⁴ ̕⁵⁾ |
