Parents’ satisfaction and evaluation of postsurgical outcomes in unilateral cleft lip and palate newly born infants with and without vacuum formed nasoalveolar molding aligners

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the post-surgical outcomes in newborns with unilateral cleft lip and palate who received presurgical vacuum formed nasoalveolar molding aligners (PVFAs) with newborns without PVFAs regarding the Parents{u2019} satisfaction, orthodontist{u2019}s and lay people{u2019}s perceptions, and to evaluate the effect of PVFAs for newborns with unilateral cleft lip and palate on parent{u2019}s satisfaction and morphology of nasoalveolar complex. Materials and Methods: In this prospective controlled clinical trial, twenty-three non-syndromic infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) were included from April 2017 to April 2018. Sixteen infants received PVFAs therapy, while seven infants did not. 2 infants dropped out of the study, so only 14 infants succeeded to complete the period of PVFAs therapy. In treatment group, standardized digital frontal and basilar photographs were taken before initiation of PVFAs therapy (T1), after completion of PVFAs therapy (T2) and 3 weeks after surgical lip closure (T3), and three dimensional digital models were taken at T1 and T2. In control group, only standardized digital frontal and basilar photographs were taken before and 3 weeks after the surgical lip closure
