Abstract

Fungi are a promising source of several natural products. Hence, the research community is quite interested in them. Fungal metabolites have historically played an important part in medicine development and contributed to the discovery of many novel drugs such as anti-bacterial, ant-fungal, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and cholesterol lowering agents.
The genus Aspergillus is considered as one of the well-known and widely spread species, that are mostly studied for their precious natural products having potential role in human health and industry.
In the present study, chemical and biological investigation of the endophytic fungus Aspergillus caespitosus, isolated from the stems of Pelargonium graveolens, was carried out.
Chemical investigation of the different fractions obtained from the total extract of the fungus A. caespitosus was conducted through several chromatographic techniques in order to purify the secondary metabolites. Subsequently, the structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed utilizing different spectroscopic techniques including mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, the fungal total extract and the various fractions as well as some of the isolated compounds were subjected to the biological investigation including: anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and anti-epileptic assays.
