Abstract

Objectives: to determine the efficacy of preoperative vaginal cleansing with an antiseptic solution (10%povidone Iodine) in reducing post cesarean wound infection. Background: Cesarean section is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures by the obstetricians. They are often complicated by infections occurring after surgery even after the introduction of antibiotic prophylaxis and other anti-infective measures. Methods: This study was carried out at Kasr Al-Ainy new OB-GYN hospital. Study type: It is a randomized controlled trial. Study design: Recruited women were allocated into two groups: Study group: 50 women who underwent cesarean sections received preoperative vaginal cleansing with 10%povidone Iodine. Control group: 50 women who underwent cesarean sections did not receive preoperative vaginal cleansing even with tap water. All patients received preoperative prophylactic intravenous antibiotics (first generation cephalosporin) with induction of anesthesia. Results: Reduction of wound complications occurred from 28% to 20%, of endometritis from 4% to 2% and of postoperative fever from 8% to 4% in the control and study groups respectively.
