Abstract

Aim: The study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Periodontitis Stage III & IV in adult Egyptian dental outpatients attending the diagnostic centre at faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University Methodology: The present study was conducted on 750 subjects. Dental patients were recruited in a consecutive manner from the outpatient Diagnostic centre, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. A full questionnaire was filled for each patient through a face-to-face personal interview using simple, short, easily comprehended questions including a section for demographic information of age, sex, social and educational levels of the patient. Also, the OHIP-14 questionnaire was filled. Conventional oral examination was held on a dental unit using the light of the unit, mirror and probe and clinical parameters as plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession were measured. Radiographic examination was performed by digital periapical radiographs. All these parameters were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Gingivitis was the most prevalent periodontal disease (39.6%) followed by periodontitis stage I (38%) then stage II (20.4%). The prevalence of stage III was 1.6% while stage IV showed the least prevalence (0.4%). The lowest mean OHIP-14 scores were noticed in patients with periodontitis stages III and IV, with no statistically significant difference between them
