Abstract Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of piezosurgery on bone healing when used in ridge splitting and its effect on osseointegration of dental implants in terms of implant stability and marginal bone loss. Materials and Methods: Cases were selected from the oral and maxillofacial surgery outpatient clinic of the academic hospital of the Faculty of dentistry Cairo University-Egypt. A total of 24 dental implants were placed in ten patients.Twelve implants were placed after mandibular alveolar ridge splitting performed using piezoelectric saw.The other twelve implants were placed after mandibular alveolar ridge splitting performed by motor driven surgical disc and bur. Implant stability was measured using osstell device immediately post-operatively, 6 months and 9 months post-operatively. Marginal bone height was measured using cone beam CT immediately and 6 months postoperatively and marginal bone loss was calculated. Bone width gain was calculated from pre and post-operative cone beam CT. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in implant stability at 6, and 9 months follow up intervals. Regarding marginal bone loss and width gain, there was no statistical difference between both groups at all time intervals |
