Abstract

Background: Health care workers associated infections put HCWs at risk of increased morbidity and mortality. Loss of skilled health personnel will adversely affect healthcare services which are already suboptimal in developing countries. The multiplying effects of occupational infections among health care workers include economic loss, physical loss and psychological disorders such as stress and depression. These have an overall negative impact on the workers, their families and the nation at large. Objectives: The aim of this study is to asses the knowledge, attitudes and practices of interns regarding infection prevention and control and since the emerging serious covid-19 pandemic couldn’t be ignored the same items concerning covid-19 infection prevention and control were assessed among physicians. Methodology: An observational analytic cross-sectional hospital based study was conducted among interns at faculty of medicine Cairo university hospitals (2019-2020) and among physicians at the same setting. The study field work was conducted in the period from March to July 2020.Results: Regarding knowledge, attitude and practice of interns towards IPC the mean knowledge and attitude scores were 8.4(±1.7) and 29.4(±2.9) respectively. Meanwhile physicians knowledge, attitude and practice scores towards covid-19 IPC were 5.6 (±0.56), 24.9 (±2.8) and5.6 (±1.05) respectively
