Abstract

Purpose: This clinical study was conducted to assess changes in serum ghrelin and gastrin level in relation to excess body weight loss (EBWL%) after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obese patients. Materials and methods We included a total of 40 consecutive patients diagnosed with morbid. obesity and prepared for sleeve gastrectomy. All cases were subjected to complete history taking, thorough physical examination, and routine preoperative laboratory investigations including serum ghrelin and gastrin were ordered for all patients. Also radiological and endoscopic investigations done for all patients. Follow up at 1, 3 and 6 months. Results: • To serum ghrelin levels, there was a significant decrease in it after operation. Serum ghrelin levels showed a significant negative correlation with the %EWL throughout the scheduled follow up visits. • On the other hand, serum gastrin levels showed a significant increase after operation. Serum gastrin levels showed no significant correlation with the %EWL at any follow up visit. Conclusions Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is an effective and safe bariatric procedure with significant decrease in ghrelin level post operative and significant increase in gastrin level post operative.
