Abstract Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impaired social interactions, verbal and non-verbal communication, repetitive and restrictive behavior, and learning disability, self-control with unusual play, interests, activities and poor eye contact.1,2 ASD are more common in males than females, with males being 3-4 times more likely to develop an ASD than females. 3 There is no medical or genetic test for Autism. Diagnosis is solely on clinical diagnostic testing.4 The causative factors of autism are unknown. They are complex in nature and involve neurobiological factors in brain. Combination of genetic factors, family history, environmental influences, prenatal and post-natal defects, infection, drug and chemical exposure may contribute to the development of autism.5,6 Autism is not an illness or disease and can’t be cured. It occurs in all ethnic, racial, and economic groups. It can be diagnosed at any age, but symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.7 |
