Abstract Background There are so many challenging decisions for a general surgeon to make in the emergency department. Acute surgical emergencies are variable including both traumatic and pathological causes. Emergency laparoscopy can be used to help reach an accurate diagnosis in addition to its great therapeutic value in management of surgical emergencies. Methods This is a case series study involving a hundred and fifty patients in Cairo University Hospitals{u2019}emergency departments,presenting with acute abdomen who underwent laparoscopy to be able to reach a diagnosis for patients that could not be diagnosed with regular investigations or as a therapeutic tool in acute abdomen conditions diagnosed by other modalities.Results Laparoscopy has a sensitivity of 98.29%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, negative predictive value of 94.29% and accuracy of 98.67% as a diagnostic tool in acute surgical emergencies. As a therapeutic tool laparoscopy successfully treated 88% and only 12% of cases needed laparotomy. Only 4% of cases developed post-operative complications and the average hospital stay for patients was 1.7 days |
