Abstract

A lot of formulae were developed to investigate the sediment transport process. These formulae are used in the numerical simulation of morphological changes. However, it is difficult to specify the suitable formula which well represents the sediment transport in a desired regime such as the Nile River.The Nile River is subjected to morphological changes naturally and due to human interventions. Either naturally or due to interventions, morphological changes need to be tracked and simulated to establish and keep sustainable activities on the river.The current research aims to investigate the capability of numerical models like Delft3D to predict the morphological and bed levels changes in the Nile River.Different sediment transport formulae, offered by Delft3D, were tested with their defaults and with different multiplication factors. Also, model inputs such as hydrograph schematization and sediment characteristics representation were investigated. The predicted changes of each simulation were compared to historical observed changes to evaluate the simulation efficiency to simulate the morphological and bed levels changes. Myer-Peter-Muller formula was found to be the most efficient with its default multiplication factor comparing to the other formulae with their default and optimized factors.
