Abstract Due to internal and external factors, Italy has sought to externalize and shift the responsibility of border control to the neighbouring countries in order to control the entry and exit of people over its territory. These externalization policies have been negatively affecting the lives of migrants and refugees who attempt to reach the Italian coasts. Thus, this thesis aims to explore to what extent Italy considers the protection of the migrants and refugees{u2019} rights while implementing its externalization strategies. In doing so, the research concludes that Italy{u2019}s policies are not compatible with international human rights instruments as the fundamental human rights of migrants are being violated due to Italy{u2019}s migration policies. It also concludes that Italy is responsible for complicity with Libya in the human rights violations committed against migrants in Libya. The findings suggest that Italy must reconsider its cooperation on migration with third countries |
