Abstract

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal (GI) disorder, affecting millions of people throughout the world. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits It is the most commonly diagnosed GI disorder, with an increased prevalence in women as compared to men IBS has repeatedly been demonstrated to both reduce quality of life (QoL) and increase health care utilization, leading to a significant economic burden. Aim of This study :was to investigate the effect of reflexology on quality of life in medical students with irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: Sixty female medical student with irritable bowel syndrome aged from 18-30 years old and recruited from out patients clinic in Cairo university student Hospital. They were assigned into 2 groups: group A(Study group):included 30 patients who received reflexology 60 minute/session, twice/week for 6 weeks . group B (Control group): included 30 patients who received medications. Results: The results of the study showed that severity of pain, constipation and Quality of life (QOL) score were not significant between the two groups before intervention (p>0.05),but after the intervention ,severity of pain, constipation significantly decreased in the reflexology group (p<0.05),also after intervention Quality of life ( QOL) score was improved in the reflexology group (p<0.05) compared to the control group
