Abstract

Dental caries considered as the most common chronic disease and major public health problem. This can occur at any age after teeth erupt. Early Childhood Caries(ECC) considered as a chronic infectious transmissible disease which defined as the presence of one or more decayed (non-cavitated or cavitated), missing (due to caries), or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth in a younger child. Aim : The aim of this study is to design health educational booklet about teeth decay for mothers of preschool children. Method : This study used a cross-sectional study design. The study participants involved 100 mothers of preschool children. In addition, 15 mothers and 15 professional experts were recruited in this study to evaluate the designed health education booklet. Setting: This study was conducted at the primary healthcare center of Aga city which provides services for children less than five year (Aga Health management center). Tools of data collection: Seven tools were used to collect data for the current study : Tool (I) : Socio-economic Scale. Tool (II) : Child characteristics Assessment. Tool (III): Structured Interview Tool to Assess Mothers’ knowledge about Teeth Decay. Tool (IV): Structured Interview to Assess Mothers’ Subjective Practices Related to Dietary Habits and Oral Care. Tool (V): Structured interview attitude assessment questionnaire : Tool (VI): Mothers ’Feedback Checklist to Evaluate the Designed Health Education Booklet. Tool (VII) : Experts’ Evaluation Checklist to Evaluate Designed Health Education Booklet. Results: It was figured out that all of studied mothers had unsatisfactory total subjective practice score. In addition to, all experts and studied mothers reported that the design of the health education booklet is clear and attractive. Besides, almost all the experts stated that it promoted the availability of information about preschool teeth decay. Conclusion& Recommendations : The designed health education booklet may be considered as an effective educational material, so it is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed health education booklet on improving mothers’ knowledge and practice regarding teeth decay that impact on children health.
