Abstract Pesticides are xenobiotic compounds used to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate pests and are classified into three major groups: fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides. Pesticides are usually used to improve crop yield and quality as well as maximizing economic re-turns. Herbicides are the most widely used class of pesticides in agriculture One of the most wildly used herbicide is atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino- 6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine), it is often used to target grassy and broadleaf weeds in corn, sorghum, sugarcane, and rangeland. The annual consumption of atrazine is estimated by 70,000–90,000 metric ton in the world. Because of its moderate aqueous solubility, low adsorption and high mobility in soil and long half-life, it has been exceeded the maximum acceptable levels of drinking water. Although many countries had banned atrazine utiliza-tion such the European Union and U.S.A, it still one of the most extensively used herbicide in the world and in Egypt as well and still detected in surface and groundwater. |
