Abstract

Compared with the general population, people living with
human immunodeficiency virus are at a higher risk of developing mental
health conditions such as depression, substance use disorders,
posttraumatic stress disorder, suicidality, psychosis, and generalized
anxiety disorder.
These conditions can negatively impact the patient‟s treatment
options, adherence to treatment, and eventual health outcome.
Unfortunately, these conditions often go undetected and the correlation
with the disease unrecognized.
Primary care providers for people living with human
immunodeficiency virus need to screen and manage these mental health
disorders for improved prognosis.
The aim of this study was to study the psychiatric comorbidities,
signs, symptoms and general functioning in HIV infected/ AIDS
patients .
This study was carried out in This study was carried out on 32
outpatients with positive HIV infection / AIDS in Shebin El-kom
tropical hospital.
Patients were diagnosed as having HIV infection confirmed by
PCR and both sexes were included .
Every patient was subjected to detailed history taking, general
examination, mental examination, Arabic version of Hamilton
Depression scale (HDI), Arabic version of Hamilton Anxiety scale (HAI), Substance misuse screening, Karnofsky performance status scale.
An informed consent was obtained from each patient.
