Abstract Background: Professional quality of life (ProQoL) is important for all nurses especially psychiatric nurses. Psychiatric nurses, in particular, are professionals who highly experience compassion fatigue which can negatively affect their mental and physical health as well as quality of patient care. It is expected that improving recognition and awareness of compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction as basic components of ProQoL among psychiatric nurses may decrease emotional exhaustion, reduce withdrawal and help in improving patients outcomes. This will in turn help psychiatric nurse to keep empathetic and compassionate professionals. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of training program about compassion on professional quality of life of psychiatric nurses. Design: This study followed a quasi-experimental research design. Setting: The study conducted at The Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurosurgery Center of Tanta University Subjects: The sample consisted of all nurses who provide direct care for psychiatric patients at time of study. Tool: Data were collected by; Professional quality of life version 5. Result: The result revealed that there is highly statistically significant improvement of nurses’ compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress mean scores immediately post, and three months after implementation of the program. Conclusion and Recommendation: this study concluded that professional quality of life of studied nurses was improved after attending training program about compassion. According to these results, the study recommended that in services training program for nurses about; how to assess and improve professional quality of life.
