Abstract

In this thesis, we introduced a metasurface powered guided-mode resonance (GMR) filter with a custom response. We utilized the GMR filter to introduce potential breakthrough systems such spectrometerless Raman identification and LiDAR applications. We used our spectrometerless Raman identification approach for Saccharides and Pathogenic bacteria, and these test cases show promising results with a high-identification accuracy. Thus, our spectrometerless Raman identification promises to replace bulky, expensive, and complex Raman spectrometers. We also introduced the features of GMR filter: angle sensitivity and field enhancement within filter’s structure. We utilized the angle sensitivity feature of the GMR filter to introduce a LiDAR system that can be used for autonomous vehicles and also be incorporated into 3D tomography. We presented a study of utilizing the high field enhancement feature of GMR filter to boast the electro-optic effect of externally biased Lithium Niobate layer which could pave the way toward tunable GMR filters
