Abstract Background: The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is spreading globally at an accelerated rate. A serious public health emergency, it is particularly deadly in vulnerable populations and communities in which healthcare providers are insufficiently prepared to manage the infection. Pregnant women, their fetuses, and newborns are likely to represent a high-risk population during the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Approximately one-third of infected pregnant women died from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) epidemics of the past two decades. The Aim of this study: was to assess the maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnant women with confirmed COVID-19 infection in comparison to normal pregnant women. Patients and Methods: In an observational retrospective case-control study that was conducted in Kasr el-ainy hospital, faculty of medicine, Cairo University during period time from March 2020 to January 2021. A total of 120 pregnant women, 40 with confirmed COVID-19 and 60 control without COVID-19 were included in this study. A total of 60 Pregnant women with COVID- 19 with moderate to severe symptoms of COVID-19. All patients were be tested using nasopharyngeal swab PCR and 40 control pregnant women without COVID-19, were recruited to the study after they met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All data were collected from medical records. Results: This study found that the medical disorders during pregnancy related to GDM, HTN, and HD were statistically significantly more significant in the COVID19 group compared to the Control Group. The most prevalent COVID-19 symptoms were bone pain, fever, and cough. COVID-19 had significantly greater anticoagulant levels as compared to the control group |
