Abstract

The magnificent city of Alexandria, since its foundation in 331 BC, and for almost a millennium afterwards, was the political, economic and cultural capital of Egypt, and one of the most significant emporia and ports in the Hellenistic and Roman world. Much of the city’s wealth and prosperity was generated by trade through its important and complex harbour system, which included harbours not only on the sea but also on Lake Mareotis (modern Lake Maryut) to the south and west of the city (Figure I).
The lake’s connection to both the Nile and the sea resulted in the lake Mareotis being
a vital maritime link between the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile River. Moreover, as a freshwater lake in antiquity it supported around its shores various agricultural activities.
This study is divided into three chapters. Chapter One focuses on the history of Lake Mareotis and the dramatic changes that happened to it along different periods in history. While the general idea in Chapter Two is the archeological work done in Lake Mareotis, including the previous as well as the recent work done there. The main objective of our study is hasized in Chapter Three, which is to introduce Lake Mareotis to the public, focusing on the most important two sites; Marea and Taposiris Magna.
These two sites were chosen as touristic attractions for both Egyptians and foreigners as they are easily accessible and have great potential as a touristic route as will be clear in the course of this study.
