Abstract

Over the past few years, tissue-engineering and new technologies have been introduced in orthopaedic surgery daily practice with encouraging results in different pathologies. Within this group is platelet-derived growth factor, which though known for more than 30 years, started to be used in orthopaedic surgery in the 1990s, reaching recognition in the 21st century.
One promising field of PRP use is sports medicine and important research has been performed regarding anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures assuming that the success of ACL reconstruction depends heavily on biological processes that could improve the outcomes and ensure optimal clinical results.
The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review illustrating the clinical and radiolgical outcomes when using PRP injection with ACL reconstruction versus not using it.six studies with 443 patients were included. Number of PRP group was 247 patients and control group was 196 patients. We found 5 prospective studies and 1 retrospective study. For all studies, the mean follow-up time was 15 months and the mean age was 32.4 y old.
The variety of PRP methods and classifications among studies might have led to heterogeneous results for some variables, despite the large homogeneity for most of them. Unfortunately, the number of studies in each analysis did not allow comparisons between all these methods. Thus, the conclusions were limited to general PRP effects, and future studies might investigate which PRP method could be more or less effective for ACL reconstruction.
There were no enough evidence to support the recommendation in favor of PRP and the use of PRP in clinical work must be reviewed. In addition, since the results are based in a low number of studies, more research would be important to confirm these results.
