Abstract

The present thesis deals with a pragmatic analysis of Richard Wright`s Native Son to get a deeper understanding of the thoughts implied by the author. Richard Wright was an African American novelist. His popularity is due to the production of his novel Native Son (1940) and his autobiography Black Boy (1945). Wright depicts the condition of the African-Americans’ life in the early twentieth century up to the decade of the 1940s, and it also explores the problems of white domination over the black people which is manifested in racial prejudice, discrimination and segregation and its effect on blacks. In Native Son, Wright creates a new type of black image and tries to give a realistic vision of black`s miserable life. He tells the story of a young African American man who struggles to find his place in society due to the harsh livings conditions he is born into. Pragmatics is a study of meaning as communicated by the speaker and interpreted by the hearer. Pragmatics consists of several aspects including implicature, speech acts, and deixis. Implicature is equivaled to the implicit meaning. In communication, a participants use utterances in acting that is known as speech acts. The present study aims to identify a pragmatic analysis of Richard Wright`s Native Son. The analysis is limited to the use of implicature, speech act, and deixis to explore interpretive possibilities of the intended messages behind the author`s utterances with an explanation of their significance both from the characters` as well as authorial viewpoint. The purpose of this study is to show the occurrence of these pragmatic tools in this novel.
