Abstract

Asphalt roads and other roads used in the movement of vehicles in all their forms are considered essential factors for the growth and development of any country in the modern world and are indispensable at the present time. This study focuses on the pavement condition survey to identify the various distresses of the pavement surface such as cracks, deformation, and patching. These distresses are collected into a pavement condition index (PCI) to present the average pavement condition along a specified sample. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the optimal sample length to evaluate the pavement condition index to improve data accuracy versus paving condition width accuracy. The first chapter contains an introduction to the concept of the road survey process and the concepts related to the pavement management system and contains a definition of the problem that will be studied and the main objective of this study and ends with a comprehensive overview of the contents of the report The second chapter discusses the information related to the survey process and its importance and discusses a historical view of the stages of development of the pavement management system It contains the types of surveying process, their description, how to use them, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type. This chapter clarifies the types and forms of distresses and defects that affect the road over a lifetime, accompanied by vivid pictures of the defects. It also explains the mechanisms used in the survey process with mentioning their types and comparison between them and an explanation of the equipment and machines used in the survey process In the third chapter, a 4 km long section of the road from Helwan Upper Egypt was chosen to be the sample of the study. In it, road distresses were surveyed six times. In the first survey, the selected section was divided into equal sectors with a length of 125 m, the second 250 m, the third 500 m, the fourth 1000 m, the fifth 2000 m, and the sixth 4000 m. PCI values were extracted for each time. In the fourth chapter, the survey data is analyzed. Determine the (PCI) values for each survey and determine the relationship between the (PCI) values and the length of the survey section Chapter Five, conclusions, and recommendations. since the pavement distress data were collected at different section rates, and the resulting data was presented that show that the average section length of 500 m can provide sufficient accuracy to assess the condition of the pavement.
