Abstract

Coins in the Islamic Age are considered an essential source of historiography. They are an important archeological sources of studying the economic, social and religious history of the states as they are considered official and valid documents that their inscriptions and decorations cannot be refuted or doubted. Hence, this study dealt with she religious, economic and social significance of Islamic coinage during the governors’ era and it’s contemporaries by investigating many Islamic coins.
The study is divided into three chapter. Chapter I dealt with the inscriptions with religious and doctrinal significance as the rulers were keen to record slogans that reflect their doctrine, or the doctrine of the governed, or their doctrine together. Chapter II dealt with the inscriptions with economic significance and fraud aspects on Islamic coins. They recorded inscriptions confirming or denying the quality and purity of their caliber, as well as phrases urging and warning against fraud. As for Chapter III, it dealt with the inscriptions with social indications on Islamic coins including those recording social events such as marriage, intermarriage, disease cases, death, conciliation as well as agreements and alliances between rulers and nations. The study concludes with the most important findings and recommendations. It published more than 200 unpublished Islamic coins, including an unmatched dirham of Sayyida Zubayda, as well as many rare coins in the catalog. These coins varied between the gold, silver and copper coins. Interest points are detected and their appearance is described.
