Abstract Cancer in the developing world is characterized by far more advanced stages at diagnosis, fewer allocated resources for prevention & treatment, and higher incidence than in countries with more developed health systems. So, expansion of palliative care services to advanced cancer patients in developing countries is urgently and badly needed. The study purpose was to examine the effects of a palliative nursing intervention on clinical pathway among patients with advanced cancer. Design: A quasi experimental design was utilized. Setting: The study was carried out at Oncology Department of Menoufia University Hospital at Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. Instrument of the study: four Instruments were used for data collection: structured interview questionnaire, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - General (FACT-G) version 4, Edmonton Symptom Assessment system (revised version) (ESAS-r), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale score (CES-D). Results: there was statistically significant improvement in quality of life and decrease in symptoms intensity & depression in studied group post palliative nursing intervention. Conclusion: palliative nursing interventions for advanced cancer patients have shown improvement in quality of life and decrease in symptoms intensity &depression. Recommendation: Palliative nursing intervention should form an important component and should be included routinely in the management of patients with advanced cancer beside conventional therapy. |
