Abstract

Summary
Study of The Relationship between Breastfeeding and Postpartum Depression in Mothers in Beni-Suef City
This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and its relation to breastfeeding in mothers in Beni-Suef City.
This study is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in Beni-Suef City and included 380 mothers who had children under 2 years old and attended a primary health care center or a health office from the four health care facilities which were randomly selected: El-kom El-ahmar, Sherif Basha health care centers , El Ghamrawy and Sharq El-Nile health offices.
A self-structured questionnaire and the validated Arabic version of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale Questionnaire (EPDS) were used to study PPD and its relation to breastfeeding practice and other sociodemographic determinants.
The study revealed that the prevalence of PPD among participants was 70.3%.
This study declared high probability of occurrence of PPD among the working mothers, mothers having ≤ 2 children, mothers having both gender of children, the high educational level of husbands (university educated), labor by Cesarean section, delayed initiation of breast feeding after the 1st hour, mothers who received information about breastfeeding before labor and presence of breast pain during breastfeeding.

from the previous findings the study recommends that: there should be psychological support for mothers during pregnancy and after labor, screening for PPD after labor, proper health education and training of mothers on breastfeeding, presence of a trained nurse in the delivery room to help early initiation of breastfeeding, and prolongation of maternity leave to 6 months is recommended.
