Abstract

The present study is under the title The Idea of the Other in the West and in Israel as projected in the selected English and Hebrew Poetry: A Comparative Study. The researcher uses the comparative method to compare “The Idea of the Other” in the view of different poets and how western poets look at ‘The Other’ in comparison of how Israeli poets consider “The Other.”The dissertation begins with a brief background of the meaning of comparative literature and how it is used to study different literal works in different cultures and languages with the aim of conveying and exchanging literature and history among countries. Then, the meaning and development of “The Idea of the Other” is presented as well as various authors’ opinions about it and how the Jews are the main source of ‘The Idea of the Other’ as one of their important religious pillars which control them and their behavior wherever they live. Consequently, the dissertation discusses the views and considerations of the western and Israeli poets who deal with “The Idea of the Other.” It shows that western poets, like Pound, Kunitz and Pinter, consider “The Other” those politicians and others who were behind World War I and II and how that caused a lot of sufferings and pains for people. On the other side, the Israeli poets, like Shalom, Goldberg and Pagis, lamented the Nazis in the past and the Arabs Palestinian people in the present. The dissertation concludes that “The Idea of the Other” is an essential field for further discussion and investigation as it is a wide idea containing many sub-ideas inside it.
