Abstract This study aimed to validate the Arabic version of the European quality of life five dimensions – five levels questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) on patients operated upon for degenerative spine diseases. The permission for obtaining a translated Arabic version of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire was requested by e-mail after completing a registration form and application to the EuroQoL office website. A justification for requesting an Arabic version was provided by the researchers to the website based on their request. Patients: This study aimed to validate the Arabic version of the European quality of life five dimensions – five levels questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) on patients operated upon for degenerative spine diseases. The permission for obtaining a translated Arabic version of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire was requested by e-mail after completing a registration form and application to the EuroQoL office website. A justification for requesting an Arabic version was provided by the researchers to the website based on their request. Methods: The validated Arabic version of the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and short-form health survey-36 (SF-36) were used to assess the validity. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity were assessed, using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Cronbach`s alpha, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r). Results The reliability was good as the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) of EQ-5D-5L, EQ-VAS, and EQ-5D-5L index were 0.852, 0.839, and 0.801 respectively. For the EQ-5D-5L self-classifier, agreement by kappa was acceptable; above 0.4, for all domains, except for the “Usual activities” domain. The percent of agreement between the two interviews ranged from 42.9 % for “usual activities” to 65.3 % for “Anxiety/ Depression. SEM of EQ-5D-5L, EQ-VAS, and EQ-index were 1.42, 7.47, and 0.09 respectively. The internal consistency was good with Cronbach’s alpha = (0.81). The Arabic version of the EQ-5D-5L total score and each domain was strongly correlated to both the ODI and the SF- 36 scores.: The Arabic version of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire is a good tool, easy to understand, reliable, and valid questionnaire for patients operated upon for spine degenerative diseases. We recommended the use of the validated Arabic version of the EQ-5D-5L as a patient outcome measure for the assessment of HRQoL of Arabic speaking populations as a valid and reliable instrument. |
