Abstract

Due to several recent incidents, it has become necessary to study the effect of blast loading on structural elements such as beams, columns, and slabs. In this thesis, the non-linear response of Reinforced Concrete (RC) slabs strengthened with Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) under blast loading has been studied. Numerical analyses are performed using the LS-DYNA finite element software to predict the behavior of the RC slabs under blast loading. The numerical results, experimental comparison, and analysis of the results have been displayed. Pressure-impulse diagrams (P-I) have been generated using numerical simulations to determine the level of damage associated with the blast loading. The design of the reinforced concrete slab under blast loading using single degree of freedom and the effect of dynamic increase factor on allowable stresses have been presented in this study.
The results of the numerical simulations compared reasonably well with the experimental results. In addition, the parametric studyshowed thatboundary conditions, the effect of reinforcement ratio, and the type of reinforcing fibers had a significant effect on mid-span displacement of the RC slab. Moreover, the proposed pressure impulse diagram (P-I) can provide a helpful tool for designers/researchers to obtain a safe design of RC slabs under blast loading.
