Abstract

Axiomatic Design (AD) is a system design methodology using matrix methods to systematically analyze the transformation of customer needs into functional requirements, design parameters, and process variables. The ultimate goal of Axiomatic Design is to establish a scientific base for design and to improve design activities by providing the designer with a theoretical foundation based on logic and rational thought process and tools. It is also a general design framework applicable to all design activities and disciplines. A robust manufacturing paradigm, as a part of manufacturing support system, pushes the manufacturing system towards worldwide manufacturing. That is achieved through the ability of waste removal and market responsiveness of a manufacturing system. Thus, several excellent manufacturing practices should be applied for that purpose. The selection and implementation of manufacturing practices isn’t an easy task because of the cost and time consumed. Wrong practices lead to the failure of a manufacturing system. Therefore, this research introduces a structured approach to design the manufacturing paradigm based on Axiomatic Design and Binary Ordering algorithm to minimize the running cost of manufacturing systems. The proposed approach is applied to a case from steel industry. Programmed software is also constructed to facilitate numerical computation and representation for Binary Ordering algorithm.
