Abstract

The snails were collected monthly from June 2017 to May 2018 at 5 sites in Damietta governorate. Seven snail species; Lanistes carinatus, Lanistes varicus, Pila wernei, Segmentorbis angustus, Melanoides tuberculata, Biomphalaria alexandrina, and Gabbiella senoriansis, were identified.
Based on light and scanning electron microscopy, and molecular techniques three cercarial types were detected; gymnocephalus cercariae, non-virgulate xiphidiocercariae and virgulate xiphidiocercariae. These cercariae belong to the families Echinochasmidae, Stomylotrematidae and Phaneropsolidae and they were identified as Echinochasmidae sp., Stomylotrma sp. 1, Stomylotrma sp.2, and Phaneropsolus sp. The gymnocephalus cercarial type of Echinochasmidae sp., the non-virgulate xiphidiocercariae of Stomylotrma sp.2, and the virgulate xiphidiocercariae of Phaneropsolus sp. were harvested from Lanistes carinatus. While, the non-virgulate xiphidiocercariae of Stomylotrma sp. 1 were harvested from Lanistes varicus.
DNA was extracted from each cercarial type and the ITS2 region and 28S rRNA gene were amplified by PCR and sequenced. The sequences of ITS2 regions of Stomylotrema sp. 1 and Phaneropsolus praomidis were submitted to the GenBank database under the accession numbers MW988537 and MW988538, respectively. The sequences of 28S rRNA genes of Echinochasmidae sp., two species of Stomylotrema sp. and Phaneropsolus praomidis were deposited in the GenBank MW988458, MW988459, MW988460 and MW988461, respectively.
