Abstract

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterized by the inability to attain or maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. This condition can affect sexual function, self-esteem, and interpersonal sensitivity, decrease physical and role function, increase depression and mental distress of the individual, and lead to relationship issues such as anorgasmia, infrequency of sexual activity, noncommunication between partners, sexual dissatisfaction, nonsensuality, and avoidance of sexual encounters.
The sexual problems of a man can directly affect the sexual functioning of his partner.
Many treatment modalities available for ED treatment as oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, intracavernosal vasoactive agents and penile prosthesis implant.
Our case control study aimed to evaluate female sexual function toward their partners affected with secondary ED treated with different treatment modalities, we enrolled 180 partners distributed into 2 matched groups case group with secondary ED males divided into three subgroup regarding to treatment as (1) oral 5-PDE inhibitor(Sildenafil)50 mg tablet, (2) Intracorporal injection of 0.5 ml papaverine (30 mg/ml) and phentolamine (2.5 mg/ml) and (3) mechanical type of implanted penile prosthesis in other side control group included healthy males.
We used International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire to assess male and The female sexual function index (FSFI) to evaluate wives.
Present study demonstrated that women whose partners have ED experience an impact on many different aspects of their relationship, as sexual satisfaction as illustrated by FSFI, that showing significant difference when compared with control group.
Current study demonstrated significant improvement in the sexual functions of impotent males who are receiving sildenafil as well as their healthy wives except frequency of satisfaction with arousal, frequency of lubrication, difficulty of becoming lubricated and finally maintenance of lubrication.
females married to ED males receiving intracorporeal injection namely quadmix as home therapy, they had shown significant improvement of their sexual functions except level of desire and maintenance of lubrication. Furthermore, our study had revealed significant improvement in the ED male patients’ sexual functions after penile implant insertion. Interestingly, their female partners did not show improvement as regards confidence of becoming aroused, frequency of satisfaction with arousal, maintenance of lubrication. Although the female partners had demonstrated diminished pain during vaginal penetration after their partners underwent penile implant, yet, this change was statistically insignificant.
