Abstract y Nurses are the frontline defense for applying daily infection control practices to prevent infection transmission from one source to another. They have different opportunities to reduce the risk of infections through properly following and practicing standard procedures (Adhikari & Aryan, 2019). Aim of the study: 1- Assess nurses knowledge and practice regarding aseptic technique in hemodialysis unit. 2- Assess nurses compliance for aseptic technique at hemodialysis unit. 3- Design suggested guidelines regarding aseptic technique at hemodialysis unit. Research design: Descriptive design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted in Hemodialysis Unit at Assiut University Hospital. Sample: Forty four nurses working in hemodialysis unit were selected and willing to participate in this study, the total number who complete the study were fourty nurses. Four nurses did not complete the study (2 traveled and 2 in vacation). Tools: Three tools were utilized to collect data for this study: Tool I: Nurses questionnaire sheet: It included: Part (1): Demographic data about the nurses such as (age, gender, qualifications, years of experience, training courses.) Part (2): Nurses knowledge: Summary - 59 - Tool II: Observation checklist sheet: Tool III: Assessment of nurses compliance with aseptic technique sheet: The suggested guide lines in the study: Apply the suggested guide lines in the setting for hemodialysiss nurses for continuous updating their knowledge and practices. Simple educational pamphlet for nurses’ work in the hemodialysis unite about the aseptic technique practice. The main findings of the present study were: 1. More than half of the studied nurses aged from 20 to less than 30 years old and males (21(52.5%) and 24 (60%) respectively). The majority of them had a diplom education 35 (87.5%). Half of them their years of experience 10 years and more and three quarters of them attained training programs about infection control 30 (75%). 2. More than half of the studied nurses 22 (55.0%) had a poor knowledge level about a septic technique and infection control regarding hemodialysis. 3. There was no statistically significant difference between the total nurses knowledge regarding infection and infection control practices among hemodialysis patients and their demographic data except their years of experience and sex (p.value 0.022, 0.035 respectively). The high percentage of good knowledge found among the high experienced nurses. 4. Less than half of the studied nurses 17 (42.5%) performing correct infection control practices regarding invasive procedures. There were 25 (75%) of nurses non compliance to infection control practice before and after invasive procedures. Summary - 60 - 5. All nurses 40 (100%) performing correct steps while washing hands before non invasive procedure and while removing gloves after non- invasive procedures. More than half of nurses were noncomplince to all infection control practices while performing noninvasive procedures. 6. More than half of the studied nurses performing infection control practices correctly during initiation of hemodialysis care and termination of hemodialysis care for patients undergoing hemodialysis (27(67.5%), 30 (75.5%) respectively) and also more than half of nurses were compliance to those practices (26(65%), 23 (57.5%) respectively). 7. More than half of the studied nurses performing correct infection control practices concerning administering intravenous medications and administering medication through central venous access device. The majority of them performing correct infection control practices concerning dealing with blood, body secretions and fluids, and safe injection practices. 8. More than half of the studied nurses 27 (67.50 %) compliance with safe injection practices. More than half of the studies nurses 24(60%) performing correctly routine disinfection of the dialysis station before beginning hemodialysis and half of them 20 (50%) were compliance to those practices. More than half of the studied nurses 26 (65%) performing incorrect routine disinfection of the dialysis station after patient had been left and more them half of them 32 (80%) non compliance to those practices. 9. All nurses 40 (100%) stated there are available room numbers for patients, separated room for emergency cases, suitable numbers for patients beds, suitable number of health team, safe environment for Summary - 61 - medication preparation (injection), routine disinfectant of the dialysis unit and safe waste and sharp management. 10. There was a positive correlation between the nurses total knowledge and their age (P. value 0.023*). There was a positive correlation between the total practice scores and nurses educational level (P. value 0.007*). A positive correlation was found between both total knowledge and practice with nurses years of experience (P. value 0.054* and 0.007*). 11. There was no significant correlation between nurses knowledge and practices scores (r= 0.142 & P= 0.384) |
