Abstract

Background: Ulcerative colitis is the most common type of inflammatory bowel disease affecting a person’s social and psychological wellbeing, quality of life, educational performance and workplace. Aim of the study : The study aimed to evaluate adherence to treatment regimen among patients with ulcerative colitis to decrease severity. Design : Quasi–experimental design was utilized. Setting: The study was accomplished in inpatient and outpatient clinic in Specialized Medical Hospital at Mansoura University. Subjects: purposive sample of 50 patients who were willing to participate in the study according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Tools: Three tools were used. Structured interviewing sheet included Demographic characteristics and medical data, Knowledge questionnaire sheet and barriers affecting adherence to treatment regimen, ulcerative colitis activity index (Mayo Score), and Eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) Results : Showed statistically significant improving of knowledge, adherence and severity level after implementation the educational instructions and follow up. Conclusion : The study concluded that there was a positive effect of educational instructions on improving knowledge, adherence and severity level among ulcerative colitis patients. Recommendation: It was recommended that written educational instructions should be available for all ulcerative colitis patients.
