Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the intervention program for mothers about their cancer children care and its effect on their health status. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized in the conduction of the study, a convenience sample of 50 mothers and their children with cancer at inpatient and out- patient departments at Oncology Institute in Mansoura City for six months from November 2013 to April 2014.The researcher prepared three different tools for data collection, namely an interview questionnaire form to collect data about mother’s knowledge of childhood cancer and care of the chemotherapy side effect, and the pediatric health status scale. The results of this study revealed that there were statistically significant improvement of mothers’ knowledge and reported practice with p. value= 0.001. Subsequently, statistically significant (p= 0.049) improvement of children’s health impairments at follow–up compared with pre-intervention phase. The percentages of children with severe impairments decreased from 60% to 40% respectively. Therefore, the study has recommended a repeat of this research on a large sample and in various places in Egypt and make the mothers of children with cancer the focus of the health care team through updated posters and brochures that improving their knowledge and then releases improve the health status of their children. |
