Abstract

Flocculants are natural or synthetic compounds which help in separation of solid-liquid mixture by sedimentation in the flocculation process. Flocculants are important in such separation due to Brownian movement of suspended particles in solution which makes the particles in constant motion and prevents sedimentation (Lachhwani, 2005).There are many types of flocculating substances such as inorganic flocculants, synthetic organic flocculants and natural organic flocculants (bioflocculants) (Sharma et al., 2006). Natural flocculants are safer than other types of flocculants and they are considered environmentally friendly (Renault et al., 2009). They can be used in many biotechnological applications such as wastewater treatment, metal ions removal, cells removal from culture broth and humic acid removal (Cosa, 2010).
